A Statistical Review in 163 Surgical cases of Intestinal Obstruction

Abstract
This reports a statistical review of our experiences with 163 cases of intestinal obstruction which were treated surgically at the Soo Do Medical College Hospital from August, 1959 to July, 1963.
1) The common causes of intestinal obstruction were Extemal hernia(32.6%), Intussusception(27.6%) and Postoperative adhesion (18.4%).
2) The sex distribution assumed a ratio of two to one with 103 males and 60 females. The age range in majority of the patient was wto to three decade of life (34.4%) ; the youngest wao 3 days old and oldest 60 of age. 25% of the patients were under the age of 1 year.
3) The seasonal distribution indicated predominant incidence in Spring and early Summer(34.9%).
4) The cardinal symptoms and signs were abdominal pain (crampy, colicky or intermitent) in 87.7% , Abdominal distention in 62.6% and vomiting in 54.0%. Leucocytosis (over 10,000£¯cmm.) was seen in 55.2%.
5) As for the operative fashion in our 163 cases ; 103 cases (63.2%) were operative intestinal decompression, 24 cases (14.7%) release of obstruction and 18 cases (11.0%) primary intestinal resection.
6) The mortality was 11.6% (19 cases) in all 163 cases. The most frequent causes of the death was electrolyte imbalance (6 cases, 31. 6%).
